HOLLYWOOD’S HOTTEST CASTING DIRECTOR TWINKIE BYRD DOES HER MAGIC WITH UPCOMING FILM, SPARKLE STARRING THE LATE GREAT WHITNEY HOUSTON

Tracy “Twinkie” Byrd once again casts up and coming actors season 6 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and The Voice’s celebrity judge Cee-Lo Green in Sparkle, helping them cross over from music to film

Jumping the Broom, Notorious and Stomp the Yard casting director, Tracy “Twinkie” Byrd works her magic again with the upcoming film Sparkle starring the late Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks Mike Epps (The Hangover, Next Friday), Cee-Lo Green (The Voice, Kang Fu Panda soundtrack) and the acting debut of season 6 American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks.

Byrd’s knack for casting the hottest and most talented entertainers continues to make her stand out from her peers and is no more apparent then Jordin Sparks and Cee-Lo Green making their big screen debut in Sparkle.  Her genius showed in Jumping the Broom by casting Paula Patton and Laz Alonso who went on to win the 2012 NAACP Image Award for the Leading Man in a Movie.  Byrd became “notorious” after casting Jamal Woolard, Angela Basset, Derek Luke and Anthony Mackie for the Fox Searchlight film Notorious.  Her eye for spotting talent was crucial for casting Stomp the Yard and Stomp The Yard: Homecoming, and she didn’t disappoint with Grammy award winner Chris Brown, Grammy nominated artist Ne-Yo, Harry Lennix, Laz Alonso and Colombus Short.

Byrd’s most recent project Sparkle is the story of three sisters that form a successful singing group while dealing with fame and drugs.  Though Jordin Sparks is expected to turn heads with her first lead role performance in the film, this was Whitney Houston’s last performance and it is being hailed as phenomenal. Houston’s role was said to compliment her next musical release.  Spark’s said Houston, “went from being this unreachable supernova pop star to my co-star, friend and someone who was like a mentor to me.  It was a gift and an honor to play opposite Whitney Houston in the film.”  Houston and Sparkle fans are overjoyed that the film will finally be hitting theaters on August 10th.  The women behind the scenes of Sparkle are producer, Debra Martin Chase, known for giving Whitney Houston her role in the TV movie Cinderella and writer and co-producer Mara Brock Akil, best known for the TV Series Girlfriends.

Today, Byrd is known as the “diamond finder of new talent” for bringing such now known actors as Michael Kenneth Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Naturi Naughton (Notorious, The Playboy Club), Columbus Short (The Girl is in Trouble, Scandal, Stomp the Yard), Laz Alonso (Jumping the Broom, Avatar) and too many other Diamond’s to name with security not being present.

Byrd’s career started over a decade ago with casting music videos for Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, Outkast, Fall Out Boy and Blink 182.  Byrd then set her sights on feature films both theatrical and television and has never looked back. With Byrd’s unparalleled success in music, television, and film, she is rightfully considered one of the best casting directors in the business.

Her upcoming 2012 projects include the feature film Filly Brown and BET’s Being Mary Jane.  She is currently casting Fruitvale with Octavia Spencer, Michael B. Jordan and Tristan Wilds for the Sundance Lab 2013.

“Sparkle” tells the story of the title character; Sparkle, (Jordin Sparks) the youngest of three sisters and a music prodigy who struggles to becomes a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart. Sparkle is from an affluent Detroit area, naive to the unexpected experiences her new life will bring as she and her two sisters blossom into a dynamic singing group during the Motown-era.  Whitney Houston will play the trio’s mother (Emma). Mike Epps plays a wealthy comedian named Satin, who woos Sparkle’s sister into a drug-filled abusive relationship on their way to the top. During her journey, Sparkle endures the trials and tribulations of fame but fights to rise through the ranks of the music business. “Sparkle” is set in the late 1960s when Detroit was the music mecca of America.

ASHLY MILES: BLAZING TO THE TOP

April 22nd, 2012

BLAZE

With her second CD, “EXPOSED,” soaring up the charts in gospel rap, 21-year-old Ashly Miles, known to her listeners as BLAZE, is on track to becoming a hip-hop gospel sensation. Brought up in a military environment (her father is a sergeant in the army) the Richmond,VA born rapper witnessed corruption all around her growing up – from drugs and alcohol to violence. Although BLAZE wasn’t involved in the corruption personally, she says it still hit close to home – with family and friends - and could have affected her own life negatively.

“I just wasn’t expected to amount to anything, so when you’re not expected to amount to anything you kind of aim for that nothingness,” BLAZE says. But with the prayers of her mother, Donna Miles (now her manager) and a determination to succeed against the odds, BLAZE put her energy and passion into Christian rap. At 16 she began rapping about the street life she had witnessed. Instead of going down the familiar path of hip-hop street lyrics – with cursing and harsh lyrics, she put a positive twist to her raps – by telling listeners to turn to Christ.

“I got my values and my esteem from Christ,” BLAZE says with enthusiasm. “God turned my life around and I’m alive and I’m thankful to be alive to be able to preach His Gospel. I’m pumped about that.”

Being pumped might just be an understatement when it comes to BLAZE’S passion for serving Christ and spreading His Word through rap music. She sparked a buzz in the gospel industry with her first CD, “He Reigns,” and shortly thereafter, she began receiving requests to travel around the country and make appearances on TBN, JCTV, Bobby Jones Gospel, The National Gospel Announcers Guild Conference and GMWA Conferences, just to name a few. BLAZE is also the recipient of several awards including the Favorite Gospel Hip Hop Artist of The Great Northwest Award, the Gospel Extravaganza Award, and a three time recipient of the ITM Female Hip Hop Artist of the Year Award!

“But I really can’t take credit for all those accomplishments and the direction of my life,” BLAZE says humbly. “That’s really God. And my mom had been praying for me for all those years, and it worked because God answered her prayers. ”
Now with her second CD “EXPOSED,” making her the first female gospel rapper to chart on iTunes, BLAZE is taking her success all in stride. After living in Seattle for four years, BLAZE and her family will now move to South Carolina – due to her father’s military duties. But BLAZE is one to blossom wherever she resides or travels.

Sonya Jenkins (Publisher & Editor of Sonya’s Spotlight) interviewed BLAZE via phone and met with her on her recent visit to Atlanta, where she attended the Dove Awards. Below is Sonya’s interview with Blaze.

Sonya: “What’s the main message in your music?

BLAZE: “The main message in my music and in every song that I write is that there is life in Christ. That’s really what I drive home – that an amazing life can really be attained through Christ.”

Sonya: “Who inspired you to get into Christian Rap growing up?”

BLAZE: “There is a group out of Atlanta originally called the 1,1, 6. They talked about Biblical truths and it was really encouraging. They were first Christian rap artists that I had ever heard – ever.”

Sonya: “What’s most difficult about being a Christian artist in this day and time?”

BLAZE: “Honestly – we really haven’t had too much of a struggle with what we do. I think God has really set things up and He has really protected us from certain things, so I can’t complain too much about things. I believe that many other Christian artists have already set the trail for artists like myself to come along, so it’s not so much of a struggle. The ride has been amazing so far. Just to see people respond to the Gospel, period – that’s where my heart is. Not too much of a struggle. Everything has been pretty nice and pretty cool.”

Sonya: “Have you had anyone to say you’ve touched their lives in a personal way?”

BLAZE: “Yes, Ma’am. It’s the Gospel really. I really can’t take the credit for it. I’m just joined to the Bible and I’m writing songs that are based on God’s work.  He’s just using me as a vessel to convey the message. Recently when we were in North Carolina a young man was dealing with suicide. He was 14 years old and he wrote a suicide note and his mom found it. He actually did not commit suicide. He told me the only thing that got him through was listening to my first album, ‘He Reigns.’ He said that made him not want to commit suicide. There have been many occasions where people have been touched by the message or touched by what I do.”

Sonya: “How important is family to you?”

BLAZE: “I love my family. My mom is my manager, so she tours with me all the time. My dad [who came up with my name Blaze in a dream] just recently joined our team. My family is really important to me. It’s a legacy of our grandparents and of their grandparents. I give my all and anything to my family.”

Sonya: “Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?”

BLAZE: “As an artist I’ll probably be still making music, but maybe more behind the scenes – probably more into producing and writing. I actually already write now for people. I’ll be doing some acting as well.  I’ve already started acting. I’ve done some plays. I was in a play called No Ways Tired. I also did a play  called . . . I’ll be doing a lot of that. Personally I should be done with school by then. I’m looking to start school at Liberty University -On Line. I’m going to study communications.”

Sonya: “What advice would you give to young ladies about self-esteem?”

BLAZE: “I would really give the advice to search out Jesus. I always point back to that because it works for me, personally. So I would just say, seek after Jesus and He’ll meet you and that your identity isn’t wrapped in any man, it’s not wrapped in any treasure – any purse and bag. It’s wrapped in Christ. You find your value and meaning and your self-esteem through Christ. And you can be whole & complete through Christ. Just search out Christ and He will meet you where you are. I got my values and my esteem from Christ. I know it works for me and I’m sure it can work for you.”

Sonya: “What do you like to do in your spare time?”
BLAZE: “In my spare time I’m chilling with my family. I’m chilling with my friends. I’m at my church . . . serving in the community.  I like to chill, I like to hoop, I like to eat good food. I’m a really laid back, relaxed type person.”

Sonya: If you had the opportunity to work with one person – who would it be?”

BLAZE: “Maaaan. It would probably be a tie between CeCe Winans & Fred Hammond. I like them a lot. I like their artistry. They have great hearts in what they do. They bring their own flavor. They have great talent.”

Sonya: “Well, Blaze, it’s been a pleasure speaking with you. Is there anything you’d like to say in summation?”

BLAZE: “I would like to encourage anybody and everybody to really press forward and to get to know who Jesus is. A lot of times we get mixed ideas or things that aren’t accurate about God, and we’re like, ‘Uh, I might want to pass.’ But just really seek after the true character of God and just watch your life turn around. Seek after God and watch Him do amazing things in your life and the lives of others.”

YOU HAVE NO IDEA – The highly anticipated first book by superstar Vanessa Williams, written with her mother, Helen Williams

April 19th, 2012

                      YOU HAVE NO IDEA

A Famous Daughter, Her No-Nonsense Mother,

and How They Survived Pageants, Hollywood, Love, Loss (and Each Other)

By Vanessa Williams and Helen Williams with Irene Zutell

“Sometimes, I thought Mom was being unfeeling when she stood over me while I silently begged for her affection. But in her own way, she was holding me tighter than I could really understand—she was teaching me the lesson I needed. I’m still learning. Mom has yet to say, I told you so.” – Vanessa Williams, from YOU HAVE NO IDEA

“A lot of parents think it’s important to be their child’s friend. When Vanessa was growing up, I didn’t care if she liked me. She could hate me as far as I was concerned—and sometimes I think she did. I wanted her to understand that I reacted the way I did because I knew she would continue to do things she would eventually regret.”  – Helen Williams, from YOU HAVE NO IDEA

I

n YOU HAVE NO IDEA: A Famous Daughter, Her No-Nonsense Mother, and How They Survived Pageants, Hollywood, Love, Loss (and Each Other) (Gotham Books, April 17, 2012) Vanessa Williams and Helen Williams give a mother-daughter take on Vanessa’s personal and professional life journey, including the obstacles they’ve overcome together and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. During Vanessa’s turbulent teenage years, mother and daughter were constantly at odds, but despite their early conflicts, Helen has always ardently protected and supported her daughter, staying in contact with the FBI about the death threats Vanessa received after being crowned the first black Miss America, and being there for Vanessa through the birth of her four children and dissolution of her two marriages.

Throughout YOU HAVE NO IDEA Vanessa recounts the trials and tribulations she has had in her life, how she reinvigorated her television career in her 40s, and how she continues to rebound after all of life’s setbacks. Nothing is off limits: including the Miss America nude photo scandal, her marriages and subsequent divorces, and a few secrets that Vanessa has never before spoken publicly about. Williams chronicles her almost 30 years in the worlds of music, Broadway, and Hollywood, as well as her time on the sets of Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives. YOU HAVE NO IDEA also includes Helen’s thoughts on her daughter’s rollercoaster of a life, her own struggles and achievements, and her reactions to a few parts of Vanessa’s life that she didn’t even know about…until now.  From her “list” of people who have wronged her and Vanessa over the years, to her 45 year-long marriage to the love of her life, Milton, Helen is sharp, funny, acerbic and fiercely protective of her daughter and her family.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA tells the story of a daughter, a mother, and their life journey thus far. But ultimately, it’s an empowering celebration of life’s surprise twists and turns—from the tragic to the triumphant. And as for the juicy stories that Vanessa and Helen tell —well, YOU HAVE NO IDEA.

Tyler Perry Hosts Fundraisers for President Barack Obama

April 14th, 2012

History in Southwest Atlanta: The President Visits Tyler Perry Studios

Movie mogul Tyler Perry helped raise millions for President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign by hosting fundraisers in Atlanta at his very own Tyler Perry Studios and at his private estate March 16. The cost of the fundraisers ranged from $250 to $35,800, with the least expensive ticket price giving guests entrance into the swank Tyler Perry Studios, a performance by Grammy nominated singer and producer Cee-Lo Green, a chance to hobnob amongst Atlanta dignitaries such as Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery and U.S. Rep. John Lewis, and a chance to witness a historical campaign speech by President Barack Obama. A photo with President Obama cost $10,000. The highest priced ticket – $35,800 – included dinner at Perry’s mansion in Buckhead, where media mogul and Perry’s friend Oprah Winfrey was also present.

Perry was overwhelmed with emotion as he introduced the President to an exuberant crowd of more than a thousand supporters at Tyler Perry Studios chanting, “Four More Years!”

“This is surreal to me,” Perry said as he began to introduce the President. Perry shared how he had no role models growing up, but still imagined owning his own business and opening his own studio.

“But in everything that I have imagined I never thought there would be a day when the presidential motorcade would come through southwest Atlanta – giving all of these little boys and little girls a glimpse of what destiny looks like,” Perry said. “The very fact that the president is here should speak to the possibility of all of us taking the limits off our own imaginations. It should speak to the possibilities of all of us being better – a better you, a better me. It should speak to the possibilities of a better today and a better tomorrow. And in that better tomorrow it speaks to the possibility of four more years.”

Perry continued, “In all that I imagined, I never imagined that I would be able to say, ‘Ladies and gentleman, the President of The United States of America – President Barack Obama’.”

After joining Perry on stage, President Obama gave him his due. “When you look at a Tyler Perry and all that he’s achieved and the humility and graciousness with which he’s achieved it, you can’t help but be proud of him and proud of our country. So, give it up for Mr. Tyler Perry,” President Obama said.

The overzealous crowd continued to cheer throughout the President’s 30-minute speech about the economy, the uprooting the U.S. troops, and health care – just to name a few of his topics.

In regards to health care reform, President Obama stated, “You want to call it Obamacare − that’s okay, because I do care,” he affirmed to thunderous applause.     “That is why we passed it– because I care about folks who were going bankrupt − because they were getting sick. And I care about children who have preexisting conditions and their families couldn’t get them any kind of insurance. And so now we’ve got reforms that will ensure that in this great country of ours you won’t have to mortgage your house just because you get sick.”

By the close of his speech, the President promised to finish what he started. “I promise you change will come,” he re-affirmed. “The change you believe in will come. And we will remind the world once again just why it is the United States of America is the greatest country on Earth.”

College Girl Beauty & Health Tips for Any Age

April 12th, 2012
Kristin Jenkins

BEAUTY, FITNESS, DIET, GLAMOUR

by Kristin Jenkins

As a student at the University of Georgia, maintaining a beauty and fitness regimen is essential to looking good and feeling good. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and ages, and just like a college girl, you, too, can have an inner and outer glow.

College Girl Diet Tips:

Limit the intake of processed foods such as frozen meals. Most are high in sodium, dehydrates the body, affects the cardiovascular system and stimulates weight gain. You should also limit simple sugar intake to avoid diabetes. Instead of sugary foods, choose complex sugars such as whole grain bread products. Remember, moderation is the key to a healthy diet.

Try not to eat anything solid three hours before bedtime. If you do, just keep in mind that your body will not have time to burn off the calories, which may lead to weight gain. I suggest starting the day off with a nutritious, high calorie breakfast, which jump-starts your metabolism. Another metabolism booster is Vitamin B12, which can be found in meat, fish, milk (and milk products), eggs and poultry. Along with a diet high in B12, eating foods high in fiber keeps the digestive track healthy. Some high fiber foods include fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

Avoid dark colored sodas, which contain carcinogens, a cancer-causing agent. Research has shown that 100,000 Americans with cancer have been linked to drinking sodas regularly. Nutrition counselor Anthony Cody advises people to “Re-think” what they drink! “Calories are more nutritious when eaten,” he said. Try to avoid caffeine because it’s a stimulant that increases your heart rate and causes potential dependency. Energy drinks containing niacin and caffeine dehydrate the body and increase chances of heart disease.

College Girl Fitness Tips:

Growing up as a competitive cheerleader, it was easier for me to stay in shape naturally. However, once I stopped cheering, I had to make sure I did at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day in order for my body to stay trim and healthy. Although there are several aerobic exercises you can choose from, such as jogging, dancing or swimming, whatever exercise you choose, make sure it’s something enjoyable for you. Walking is a great, low-impact aerobic that keeps you physically fit.

College Girl Skin-Care Tips:

For smooth, soft, and glowing skin, wash your face twice a day. I personally recommend Mary Kay products because they are made for different skin types and have worked well for me. Washing makeup off before going to bed is essential to keeping your skin healthy. It also keeps your pores unclogged. For supple, youthful skin, you must also use a moisturizer with SPF 15. Sunscreen protects your skin from sun damage. “You should use a mask or use microdermabrasion at least twice a week and moisturize morning and night to keep you skin in top shape,” said Mary Kay Senior Sales Director Martica Jenkins.

Remember that drinking lots of water benefits all bodily functions and is essential to staying healthy. Drink at least eight glasses a day.

Your overall health is not only determined by what you eat and drink – but by what you think. No matter what your age, keep a positive attitude. Your attitude will determine your altitude.

Celebrity Fitness Tip From One of my Favorite Actresses:

GABRIELLE UNION

“JUST DO IT. That’s my biggest tip. Get off your butt and hit the gym. The biggest challenge is that you just don’t want to do it.  You’ve got to pay for what you put in your mouth. Just get to the gym. Once you get there you’ll feel pressure and you’ll be a little competitive.”

THINK LIKE A MAN – Opening in theatres April 20

April 4th, 2012

One guy loves his girlfriend, but when is he going to grow up and propose?

One woman wants a man as successful as she is, but what about the up-and-comer right under her nose?

Then there’s the ladies’ man with his sights set on that smart beauty, but will her standards throw him off his game?

How about that sweet guy who can’t break free of his mother’s infantilizing affection to recognize the love he has with the cute single mom?

Sounds like these people need some words of wisdom, the kind that can only come from bestselling author Steve Harvey. The question is, how should they use that advice?

The sharp, funny and truth-telling romantic comedy Think Like A Man is an ingenious adaptation of comedian and nationally syndicated radio host Steve Harvey’s New York Times best-selling book, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man.  In the film, four interconnected and diverse friends have their love lives shaken up after the women they are pursuing buy Steve Harvey’s book and start taking his advice to heart.  When the band of brothers finds out that they have been betrayed by one of their own, they conspire to use the book’s teachings to turn the tables.

The romantic comedy stars Michael Ealy (Takers, For Colored Girls), Jerry Ferrara (“Entourage”), Meagan Good (Jumping The Broom, Stomp The Yard), Regina Hall (Scary Movie, Law Abiding Citizen), Kevin Hart (Death At A Funeral, Not Easily Broken), Taraji P. Henson (Hustle & Flow, Karate Kid), Terrence J (BET’s “106 & Park,” Stomp The Yard: Homecoming), Jenifer Lewis, Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Ordinary Family), Gary Owen (Little Man, Daddy Day Care), Gabrielle Union (Cadillac Records, Bad Boys II), and Chris Brown (Stomp the Yard, This Christmas).  LaLa Anthony (Two Can Play That Game) and Arielle Kebbel (“The Vampire Diaries,” The Uninvited) are featured.

Tim Story (Fantastic Four, Barbershop) is the director.  The film was written by Keith Merryman & David A. Newman (Friends with Benefits); based upon the book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” by Steve Harvey.  Will Packer (Stomp the Yard, Obsessed, Takers) produces via his Rainforest Films banner.  Steve Harvey (The Original Kings of Comedy, “Family Feud”), Rushion McDonald (”The Parkers,” “The Jamie Foxx Show”), Rob Hardy (“Vampire Diaries,” Stomp the Yard: Homecoming), and Glenn S. Gainor (Friends with Benefits, Prom Night, Quarantine) are the executive producers.

THINK LIKE A PRODUCER

Part of Rainforest Films producer Will Packer’s job is to find new and exciting projects that can be tailor made for big screen adaptations.  Steve Harvey’s New York Times best-selling self-help book Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man caught his attention.  “Everywhere I went I would see women with this book and it intrigued me, so I had to find out about it.  I read the book,” says Packer.  “I didn’t know Steve was giving away all the secrets.  After my initial reaction of ‘Steve, what are you doing?’ – I thought that this would make a really good movie.”

Packer called Harvey and Rushion McDonald (executive producer for “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” and Think Like A Man) and he and his business partner, Rob Hardy (co-founder of Rainforest Films and executive producer on Think Like A Man), proposed a collaboration.  For the man whose bestselling advice started it all, the prospect of a movie had never entered his mind. “I didn’t see it coming,” says Harvey. “They were so serious about it that they flew to my ranch in Texas. I had taken a few days off and I was over there fishing. Well they came to talk about buying the rights to the movie and I went ‘Wow.’ That’s how the deal happened.”

For Packer, including Harvey was paramount to getting an adaptation done right, something that would appeal to people beyond simply the book’s readers. “Steve was instrumental in the creative process because it’s his voice, so he wanted to make sure that it was something that wasn’t limited to any particular audience-any particular niche or any particular segment of people,” says Packer.

For Steve Harvey, it’s the ultimate dramatization of the mix of sage advice and laughter that made his book a bestseller. “This movie is dead on,” he says. “This is not some pie in the sky thing that can’t happen, hasn’t happen, no chance of happening. This really happens in real life. That’s the takeaway people are going to get from this movie. But now it’s a romantic comedy, which is really cool, and which is like my book. You’re going to laugh, you’re going to agree, you’re going to cry.”

NOTABLE FINANCIAL ADVISOR LEE JENKINS STARTS NEW CHURCH IN GEORGIA

Nationally recognized business man, investment advisor, best-selling author and minister Lee Jenkins, one of the top financial advisers in the industry, according to On Wall Street magazine, premiered his first sermon as Senior Pastor of Eagle’s Nest Church September 18 at the Doubletree Hotel in Roswell, Ga. Jenkins spoke about soaring like an eagle in tough economic times in front of a congregation of almost 200 supporters.

“The eagle symbolizes courage, strength and leadership and at Eagle’s Nest Church we specialize in developing and equipping leaders for the work of the ministry and the marketplace,” Jenkins stated. “I’m so excited about this new phase of ministry in my life, but I’m even more excited about all the lives that will be changed through this ministry.”

Jenkins, who has penned three books about finance − his latest, Lee Jenkins on Money: Real Solutions to Financial Challenges − was ordained as a minister in 1991 but decided to submit to the ministry full time as Pastor Lee just recently. The eloquent teacher of finance and biblical principles, who obtained a business degree at the University of Tennessee, where he was a standout cornerback and later drafted by the National Football League, says he will always have a penchant for helping the masses shed financial debt and invest money appropriately. But Eagle’s Nest Church is now his bigger passion.

“At Eagle’s Nest Church we want to stir the calling in people so that they can go out and do something great for God.” Jenkins said.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Jenkins accepted Christ and was baptized at a young age, but it wasn’t until he was an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville, that he fully committed his life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and to serving in the ministry.

While at UT, Jenkins was the president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Under his leadership FCA grew prodigiously, becoming the largest ministry on campus where hundreds of students came to know the Lord. After graduating from UT with a business degree, Jenkins was drafted by the New York Giant of the National Football League (NFL) as a defensive back. When his football career was cut short by injuries, he entered the music industry where he served as the road manager for the Grammy Award-winning gospel group The Winans. He has also served as business advisor for gospel great Kirk Franklin.

After his time in the music business, Jenkins entered the financial services industry where he had a stellar 24-year career and is presently a managing partner of investment firm Atlanta Capital Group, which manages a half-billion dollars in client assets. His financial advice has been featured numerous times on local television stations and in newspapers, as well as in Money magazine, on CNN and in Gospel Today magazine, where he was featured on its cover as one of 10 “New Kingdom Voices.”

Jenkins is a family man who takes pride in his three children, Kristin, Martin, and Ryan. Martica, his wife and First Lady for almost 24 years, has played a supportive role in his life and in his decision to become a pastor.

Jenkins’ investment career began in the 1980’s as one of 150 students in a stockbroker training class at the World Trade Center where his intellect, integrity, insight, and tenacity earned him the title “Most Likely To Succeed.” Lee’s fellow Wall Street trainees weren’t the only ones impressed with his potential; after graduating, a Wall Street firm made him the youngest African-American stockbroker ever hired by the company’s Atlanta office. .As an investment advisor, Lee flourished, rising to the position of Vice President of Investments at two major firms; Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and Raymond James & Associates. Lee’s success was also evident by his induction into the prestigious President’s Club – first at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and later at Raymond James & Associates. In 1998 Lee received the Circle of Life Award at Raymond James for applying his financial expertise to impact his community. At the turn of the century, Lee broke new ground by founding Jenkins Wealth Advisors, LLC. As the guiding force behind this independent advisory firm, Lee provided advice and managed investments for multi-millionaires, business executives, entrepreneurs, celebrities, religious leaders and educational institutions. Nine years later, in 2009, his firm merged with Atlanta Capital Group, combining client assets of more than $500 million.

Lee was a guest panelist on the 2009 CNN Prime Time Special In God We Trust: Faith & Money in America and has been a guest commentator on CNN’s popular financial show Your Bottom Line with host Gerri Willis. He has also appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox network affiliate programs, as well as on Christian networks like TBN, and The 700 Club on CBN. Before appearing on TV and radio, Lee was introduced to households across the country as the author of Taking Care of Business: Establishing a Financial Legacy for the African American Family, published in 2001 by Moody Publishing/Lift Every Voice. Within a year Taking Care of Business was a recommended reading at the Harvard Divinity School’s Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) and on the Black Expressions Book Club list. The warm reception of his first book encouraged Lee to write two additional user-friendly books: What to Do When Your Money is Funny: Real Solutions to Financial Challenges (2007), and Lee Jenkins on Money (2009), which in 2010 made the Black Christian Bestseller’s List along with notable authors like T.D. Jakes, Colin Powell, Tony Dungy, Bill Cosby, George Foreman, and Tony Evans.

Lee Jenkins does not fit the dry, boring stereotype many people have of a financial advisor. His personable, witty, and sincere demeanor helps him deliver engaging and informative seminars and sermons that have enriched the lives of more than a half-million people. Once a small group leader, trainer, and seminar leader for Crown Financial Ministries, Lee has grown to develop his own series of financial lessons that are requested by corporations, churches, and schools around the country. Lee’s eye-opening seminars, sermons, and workshops have been attended by crowds up to 65,000 people. Promise Keepers Men’s Conferences and Maximum Man Men’s Conferences have used Lee as a plenary speaker on numerous occasions. In the corporate, educational, and sports world, companies like Ernst & Young, Chick-Fil-A Inc, University of Virginia, University of Tennessee, Clark-Atlanta University, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Hawks have all benefited from Lee’s power-packed presentations.

My Greek Experience

February 13th, 2012

My Greek Experience
By A. Jenkins

I’ve always wanted to visit Greece and take a Mediterranean cruise, so when a friend asked me to take a spring trip to Athens, Greece (with a group of avid travelers) to visit some of the most beautiful and revered islands in world, I knew I had to make it a part of my travel experiences.

At the time, my Bible class was studying the Book of Revelation. An upsurge of interest was sparked when I saw ancient Ephesus and the Isle of Patmos listed on the itinerary. I especially wanted to see Patmos where St. John the Evangelist had a vision of Christ and wrote the text to the apocalyptic Book of Revelation. I knew that actually visiting the places we were studying about would be more of a spiritual awakening for me . . . so my Greek experience began.

Our first stop was in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). Our layover was short, but what I saw of the city (the beautifully colored buildings and the many canals) was enough to make me want to return for a visit someday. A few hours later, we were off to Athens, Greece. Upon arrival in Athens, we were warmly greeted and briefed by our tour guide. After getting refreshed at our hotel, we were off to get a taste of Athens.

On day two, we boarded our cruise ship, sailing the Aegean Sea. Our first stop was on the Island of Mykonos, the most visited of the Greek Isles. We hit the ground running, taking in all the beautiful sights and sounds of the rolling sea. I immediately fell in love with the Mykonos; its sugarcube houses with blue/ green shutters, some with balconies that hang over the sea, and its giant white-washed windmills that seemed to beckon me to come closer. And I obeyed. I found myself lost in the winding streets that were designed long ago to confuse invading pirates. With the friendly atmosphere and total relaxation by the seashore, I could have stayed in Mykonos for days. But our itinerary was to see some of the Greek Islands, and my mission was to set foot on The Island of Patmos and to see ancient Ephesus.

Our next stop was at the port of Kusadasi, Turkey. Its history spans almost 10,000 years. I was ecstatic to be on another continent (Asia). We boarded our tour bus, traveling on land that was once sea during ancient biblical days. The drive along the countryside and along the coast of Asia Minor was simply breathtaking – nature at its best. Soon we were in ancient Ephesus. And if there is one excursion not to be missed, it is the one to Ephesus. It is one of the most extensive and best-preserved ancient cities of the world. Once we were off the bus, we took a scenic walk down the same road the Apostle Paul had traveled when he was in Ephesus preaching Christianity to the Ephesians. We were in awe, and all that I could hear were ancient stories being told by the guides and the sound of clicking cameras.

After feasting on ancient Ephesus, we were off to the Holy Island of Patmos, the Island I was most passionate about. We docked at Skala, the Island’s main port. Again, we boarded our tour bus and were taken up to the Monastery of the Apocalypse. Once there, the crowd hushed; it was like standing on holy ground. We entered the little cave, The Sacred Grotto, and stood in silence as we looked upon the stone pillar where St. John the Evangelist had slept and where he “heard a great voice, as of a trumpet” commanding him to write a book and “send it unto the seven Churches in Asia Minor.” I was humbled by my experience, to say the least. At that moment, I was reassured that I had gotten what I had come to Greece to get . . . spiritual enlightenment.

We got a taste of other interesting Greek Isles as well. We visited Rhodes, which is the former fortified headquarters of the crusaders. I was daring enough to take the strenuous walk to the top of the Acropolis (the fortified castle) along with a few more brave souls. The view from the top, looking out over the Aegean Sea, was well worth the strenuous climb.

But my Greek experience would not be complete without telling you about our last stop and the most extraordinary island in the Aegean Sea… Santorini. Santorini, a volcanic island, is the most spectacular site in Greece. Its main town of Thira (also called Fira) is perched 1,000 feet above sea level on the edge of the crater, and other towns look like crystals of salt or freshly fallen snow sprinkled along the spine of the island. From a distance, on our ship out on the Aegean Sea, the towns appear to be snowcapped mountains. Once at the port of call, we were given several options to reach Thira or Fira: walk, hire a donkey, take a tour bus, or go up by cable car. We chose to take the scenic ride up by tour bus. Each side of The Santorini Island has big drops, and the road to the top was along the edge of the cliff. I prayed all the way up for our safety, and I was thanking God at the same time for giving me such an awesome, once in a lifetime experience. Once at the top, we had a bird’s eye view of ships that looked like toys in a gigantic bathtub (1,000 feet below). We took the cable car back down to the dock. The view was awesome, and the ride was a thriller. Whether your view is from the top of the Island of Santorini or from the ship on the Aegean Sea, this beautiful Island touches the very core of the human soul, leaving you with a never-to-be-forgotten experience.

At the end of our cruise, we spent three more days in Athens, Greece. We visited more historic attractions: Delphi, The Parthenon, more of the old city and the new; shopped, dined at some of the fine restaurants in the Plakas and enjoyed great entertainment. Finally, it was time to return home. I returned rejuvenated, excited, spiritually awakened and looking forward to my next trip. Once back home (Atlanta), I had more Greek experiences. I went to see the stage musical “Mama Mia”, at The Fabulous Fox Theater, and most recently, I took in the movie, “Mama Mia”. It has been all Greek for me.

REMEMBERING WHITNEY HOUSTON

Reprint of Sonya Jenkins’ cover story on WHITNEY HOUSTON for UPSCALE MAGAZINE – December/January 1993 (Partial Article)

A likely superstar from early childhood, singer/actress Whitney Houston is now the epitome of success. With three albums reaching multi-platinum status, her musical talent and powerful persona have charmed the music industry over the past decade. Whitney is the only artist to achieve seven consecutive No. 1 hits and the list of her accomplishments is endless. But from a very personal perspective, the accomplishments is endless. But from a very personal perspective, the accomplishment that truly measures the elusive entertainer’s success has little to do with all of the accolades, applause or her star status.  For Whitney, the true measure of success comes from what she has found with her soulmate and husband – singer Bobby Brown – and that is love.

When conversing with the multi-talented star, one can immediately detect her virtuous spirit. She is a confident woman who does not avoid discussing any topic. She is cordial and genuine, and she magnetizes most people with her beauty and grace. What is the magic ingredient? Is it her charming personality, or is it her articulate and lighthearted voice? One thing is for certain, Whitney Houston’s magical ingredient has its way of reaching out and touching live. At 29, she has blossomed into a self-assured woman who knows no boundaries.

Settled in her Mendham, N.J. estate, Whitney is unwinding from a road trip. She doesn’t get too comfortable because in just a few days, she has projects to finish that will take her out of the country. “Sometimes it gets to be a bit strenuous,” Whitney admits as she talks about the hectic life of an entertainer. “But it’s part of my job, so that’s what I do.”

This past July, Whitney was married to Brown in a gala ceremony. She feels that love and having a committed companion have surpassed all of her worldly accomplishments. “There is no rhyme or reason for love; it’s just there and when it happens, it happens, and it happened for me!” she says enthusiastically.

Still a newlywed and already expecting a baby in the spring, Whitney reveals that married life is very refreshing. “I am enjoying being married to a man who is secure with himself and who is truly devoted to his woman. I know that Bobby loves me, and I know that I love Bobby. When you have companionship that brings a certain amount of contentment into your life, you can share your thoughts with someone special,” explains Whitney. Whitney feels that communication is a must in a good marriage. “Bobby and I truly understand each other, and I think that’s the blessing of marriage – to have a partner to share and communicate with. I’ve always been a firm believer that love isn’t love until you give it away.”

Although Whitney and Bobby were considered an odd couple, the pair became good friends, and slowly their reationship progressed and became more romantic after meeting at “The Soul Train Music Awards” three years ago. “I didn’t think that Bobby liked me, and he didn’t think I liked him. It wasn’t until we got to know each other better that we learned we were very much alike,” she confides.

When asked about the things the two of them agree on the most, she sighs and says, ” We feel the same wayy about certain things. We love children, and we come from backgrounds that are surrounded by family. We love God, and we put Him first in our lives.” She conceded, “We have all the things that I think will hold a relationship together. It’s not the money, and it’s not the fame. We both had that on our own. It’s some more than that – it’s an affection – it’s a friendship – it’s love. There’s a bond that Bobby and I have, yet there are a lof of things that are different about us and that makes it good. I never wanted to be with someone exactly like myself. It took a while to find that someone, but I did and it just happened to be Bobby.”

To demonstrate their compatibility, the couple recorded the uptempo tune “Something In Common,” on Bobby’s latest self-titled album. Whitney’s lyrics are about her old-fashioned ways, and Bobby sings about some of the mistakes he’s made. All in all, the Boston-bred, streetwise singer and the God-fearing, sophisticated diva had enough in common to get them to the altar.

Although Whitney’s career is fast-paced and keeps her busy, she plans to curtail her activities for the preparation of her baby’s birth. “At least two months prior to my giving birth, I will definitely not do any work,” she states. “I’m taking it as slowly as I possibly can, but I’m an on-the-go kind of person. I like to keep busy, and staying busy kind of makes my pregnancy go a little bit faster. My mother carried all three of us and worked right up to a few days before she gave birth, so it can be done. Women do some incredible things,” she affirms.

Like others, Whitney’s private life has been scutinized by the public. Prior to her relationship with Bobby, Whitney could not seem to escape the public’s constant concern with her love life. If she was not dating a special man, she had to deal with rumors that questioned her femininity, bringing her much hurt and humiliation. “I used to let the rumors hurt me, because somebody is saying something about me which is not true. It’s a lie,” she states emphatically. “I know myself, and I know what I do and what I don’t do. It kind of dawned on me that peope who say what I am and what I like and what I don’t like, don’t really know me. So, I’ve tried not to really concern mysef with things people say about me. They don’t know who I am,” explains Whitney.

STATEMENT FROM BISHOP T.D JAKES

PRODUCER OF “SPARKLE”

We are deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely passing of Whitney Houston, whom we were blessed to have just completed work with on the remake of the film “Sparkle.” We ask the world to join us in lifting up Whitney’s family in prayer and ask God for their strength and comfort during this devastatingly difficult time. At the apex of her career, Whitney had nopeer, with a voice that shaped a generation. She has left behind a musical and film legacy that will endure…. she will be sorely missed by us all.

Remembering WHITNEY HOUSTON – One of my first cover stories as an entertainment journalist for a national magazine was of Whitney Houston in the early 90s – UPSCALE MAGAZINE. I absolutely loved her music, so when I was assigned the story and told that Whitney Houston would be calling me, I was super excited & nervous. I had met her a few years after she first came on the music scene and my brother had met her prior to me. Even back then, we felt like we had met a true Icon.  I am deeply saddened over her passing. Whitney was a Beautiful Talent who is Gone Too Soon. Rest In Peace, Whitney Houston – 1963-2011
