Sonya’s SUPER WEEKEND in Phoenix for
Super Bowl XLII

Super Bowl XLII was exciting and memorable. Not only was it one of the best Super Bowl games ever, but the numerous parties and events had me in a whirlwind from the time I landed in Phoenix – a few days before the Super Bowl – until my departure, the day after the Super Bowl. In the midst of the action, I was able to attend some rather nice events, including The Red Carpet Event and Athlete’s Party, presented by Youth Lifeline America’s Roland Williams and hosted by comedian/actor Cedric The Entertainer. Former NFL star Deion Sanders, Cleveland Browns’ Braylon Edwards, Atlanta Falcons’ DeAngelo Hall and several other high profile athletes were on hand. The party featured a live and silent auction, casino tables, a fashion show, and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and desserts.

Actress Holly Robinson Peete and her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete also presented a host of Super Bowl events – one being their Gridiron Glamour Celebrity Fashion Show and Benefit Brunch. The Peetes have showcased Gridiron Glamour for 10 years during Super Bowl week in conjunction with the HollyRod Foundation (www.HollyRod.com). This year’s fashion show, partnered by the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center in Phoenix, supported children with autism, the most prevalent childhood developmental disorder in our nation today. After the fashion show I caught up with Holly, along with boxer Laila Ali and her husband (former NFL player Curtis Conway), actor Terry Crews, Braylon Edwards, and comedian/actor Eddie Griffith.

Although I enjoyed all the affairs I attended, I especially enjoyed the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, where Patti LaBelle, CeCe Winans, Martha Munizzi, Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Winans, and the NFL Player’s All-Star Choir brought down the house with their soul-stirring, gospel performances. The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, now in its ninth year, was founded by Melanie Few, founder and president of the Atlanta-based company Results Inc. Few is the first and only African-American to secure an NFL sanction for a concert. And not surprisingly, Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is ranked one of the “Top 3 Must-See Events” during Super Bowl Weekend by USA Today for the past three years.

Along with adding the EA Sports party, an ESPN party, and several other events to my schedule, I also became a stand-in director for a radio show when my pal Sheila Washington asked me to help out with her nationally broadcast show, The Good News Report – Good News, Great News & God’s News (WWW.KLAV1230AM.com) based in Las Vegas. Sheila launched the Good News Sports Report Super Bowl Weekend in Phoenix. Former football greats Randall Cunningham, who is now a pastor at Remnant Ministries International (Las Vegas) and Terance Mathis, now a NASCAR Team Owner, were just a few athletes who called in to share some good news.

Last, but not least, Congrats to the New York Giants – Super Bowl Champions 2008!

Next year’s Super Bowl will be held February 1 in Tampa, FL.
