The stars came out to shine at the 18th Annual Trumpet Awards in Atlanta, Jan 30 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Hosted by Nicole Ari Parker, Malcolm Jamal Warner, LisaRaye McCoy and Roland S. Martin, the Trumpet Awards continued its rich tradition in recognizing individuals who, through consistency and longevity, have achieved success in their industries and who are regarded not only for what they have accomplished individually, but also for the achievement they inspire in others.

The exclusive, star-studded celebration, attended by entertainment icons and the who’s who in business, politics, religion, law, sports and entertainment, hosted a week long series of prestigious events that attracted thousands of people to the city of Atlanta. As part of the evening’s festivities, the 2010 Trumpet Awards saluted entertainment icon, Steve Harvey with a coveted Pinnacle Award and music legend Frankie Beverly with the Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of their significant contributions to the entertainment industry and the African-American community. When asked the key to his success on the Red Carpet, Steve Harvey acknowledged how God plays such a pivotal part in his accomplishments. “I took the long way around, so I can tell you, it [success] would have happened for me sooner had I understood quicker what my mother was trying to teach me,” he said. “If you put God first and you honor God, God will do things for you that you will never imagine for yourself. That’s the key.”

The Awards kicked off with a glamorous Red Carpet Roll Out, hosted by one of America’s favorite daytime TV judges, The Honorable Judge Glenda Hatchett. Throughout the evening, Trumpet Awards were presented to some of today’s most accomplished businessmen, activists and unsung heroes. “We are thrilled to bring such a stunning and unforgettable event that celebrates excellence, freedom and diversity, at its finest,” said Trumpet Awards Creator and Executive Producer, Xernona Clayton. “It is truly a magical evening celebrating individuals who have had a profound impact in our community and on our world.”

This year’s Trumpet Awards nominees were Frankie Beverly (Lifetime Achievement Award); Reverend and Mrs. Joseph E. Lowery (Civil Rights); Dr. Farrah Gray (Young Entrepreneur); Clarence Otis, Jr. (Business); Steve Harvey (Pinnacle Award); John Rodgers Jr. (Corporate Executive); Reverend Jim Holley, PhD (Religion/Business); Synthia SAINT JAMES (Arts); Don Jackson (Producer’s Award) and General William E. Ward (Military Service).

Some of the highlighted events surrounding the 2010 Trumpet Awards included a Welcome Reception, Prayer Breakfast, and High Tea with High Heels Fashion Show (honoring accomplished business women), Mix and Mingle at Club Trumpet, Sponsors Honorees Dinner and the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame.

Footsteps of eight new revered civil rights icons were added to the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame this year. The International Civil Rights Walk of Fame was created in 2004 to give recognition to the foot soldiers of justice who sacrificed and struggled to make equality a reality for all. This extraordinary display has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city of Atlanta and has enriched the heritage of the civil rights movement. The 2010 inductees in the distinguished group included Congressman James E. Clyburn, Judge Damon J. Keith, Reverend Samuel Billy Kyles, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), Eugene C. Patterson, Reverend Albert Sampson, Rita Jackson Samuels and Congresswoman Diane E. Watson.

Established in 1993, The Trumpet Awards is one of the most prestigious, national awards ceremonies highlighting African-American accomplishments and contributions. Initiated by Turner Broadcasting, the Trumpet Awards have been televised annually and distributed internationally to over 185 countries. The 18th Annual Trumpet Awards were produced by Central City Productions and will air on TV One and in national syndication. For more information about the Trumpet Awards, please visit
