Through the Rain: Derby Fans Still Celebrate
Kentucky Derby 136
Louisville, KY was the place to be for the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby, the Oaks and the Kentucky Derby Festival. This year, 155,804 Derby attendees (one of the largest crowds in the history of the Kentucky Derby) convened at Churchill Downs for a social scene filled with horse racing & betting, fashionable chapaeux, mixing & mingling, mint juleps and more. Although The Kentucky Derby is only a two minute race dubbed “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” the festive social scene and fanfare is what make Louisville (Derby City) come alive from mid April until the first Saturday in May.
From the A-List parties, concerts, boat rides, balloon races, steamboat races and more, stormy weather has never stopped worldwide fans from coming out and celebrating - Derby Style. Fans had to deal with a rainy, gloomy, soggy morning and afternoon at the track on Derby day, but just as the 11th race was about to begin (the actual Kentucky Derby is always the 11th race), the sun shined brightly at Churchill Downs. Super Saver (the winning horse at the 136th Kentucky Derby) made his way into history by beating the odds (15-1). Calvin Borel, three-time Derby-winner in four years, was the jockey to propel Super Saver to first place.
As a Derby attendee for four years straight, I figured the best way for you to experience the Derby (without actually being there) is by viewing the myriad of pictures I took. So, enjoy the photos as I recap Kentucky Derby 136.
