The Spaghetti Junction Urban Film Festival, one of the fastest growing American film festivals in the Southeast, brought nationally acclaimed filmmakers to the Gallery Fun Plex (formerly Screenworks) in Decatur, GA recently. Highlighted films included Jada, a drama directed by Clifton Powell, starring producer and actor Rockmond Dunbar (Soul Food, Prison Break), and singer Jason Weaver, Tupac Assasination: Conspiracy or Revenge, written and directed by RJ Bond and Executive Produced by RJ Bond and Frank “Big Frank” Alexander, Tupac’s former bodyguard. Additional film screenings included Rhyme Animal, Three Can Play That Game, and Faizon Love. Other festival highlights included this year’s 2009 SJUFF IMPACT Awards presentation to Ralph Scott, executive producer for ‘The Best Shorts’ (BET-J), independent filmmaking workshops, as well as festival finale’s SJUFF Impact Awards Black and White Ball. Angela Bassett, best known for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With it, and also known for her roles in Malcolm X (as Betty Shabazz), Waiting to Exhale, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, among other roles, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame March 20. Bassett acknowledges that many of her roles depict women who are survivors. “Anytime you have a dream and see it come true, it’s a victory, “ Bassett says. “Many of my characters have a dream or they have obstacles that they have to overcome. And as black women, they survive it.” Bassett plays Brenda, a struggling, single mother, in Tyler Perry’s MEET THE BROWNS.
