Keshia Knight Pulliam
Keshia Knight Pulliam sat down with me for a quick chat at Park 75 Restaurant inside the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta recently as a part of Celebrity Chocolate Fridays, a social mixer featuring a celebrity guest and an assortment of chocolates. Since baking is one of her favorite pastimes, Keshia shared one of her own chocolate dishes with guests at the final chocolate mixer, March 27. The talented actress, best known for her role as Rudy in the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show, recently played a prostitute (Candace) in Tyler Perry’s MADEA Goes to Jail and has a recurring role on Tyler Perry’s TBS comedy House of Payne. Although she’s a passionate actress who likes taking on roles that have depth and that challenge her, the 30-year-old actress also plans to prove her talents behind the camera as well. Read on for an excerpt of my interview with her.
Sonya: You’ve been quite busy in your acting career over the last year with the release of Madea Goes to Jail. What do you do in your spare time?
Keshia. For one, I love cooking and I love baking and I’ve done it for a long time. That’s why I was excited when this opportunity presented itself [Celebrity Chocolate Fridays]. I just do regular stuff – you know – I like to go jogging in the park . . .
Sonya: So you live here in ATL?
Keisha: I do. This has been my home base for a while now, and I will always have a place here, but I travel a lot.
Sonya: So what projects are you working on?
Keshia: Right now I’m really focusing on my production company – Pullpenn Productions. We have some projects that we’re working on right now, so I’m excited.
Sonya: Most people know you as the cute, little girl who played Rudy on the
Cosby Show. How challenging was it to play a prostitute in Madea Goes to Jail?
Keshia: I think overall it wasn’t really that difficult for me. Just really diving into it and making it as believable as possible was a challenge in itself, but it was one I was up for and a challenge I was eager to take on.
Sonya: What was most rewarding about playing the role?
Keshia: Just the turnout in terms of how many people that have stopped me on the streets and said ‘I enjoyed the movie and you were wonderful.’ I think that in itself is why I do what I do.
Sonya: How was it working with Tyler?
Keshia: It’s wonderful working with Tyler. You know I work with him on House of Payne and I’ve worked with him over the last two years. He’s really great at what he does.
Sonya: Is there a special someone in your life right now?
Keshia: (Laughs). Ahh . . . I’ll keep that part to myself.
Sonya: So, what do you look for in a special companion?
Keshia: Honesty, loyalty – and just a good, fun-loving person.
Sonya: Do you get out a lot, socially?
Keshia: I’m really lame. I go to Barnes and Nobles. I like to read magazines at Starbucks. That’s what I do. And I go bowling – and that’s about it.
Sonya: How do you stay in shape?
Keshia: I go to the gym and I jog.
Sonya: And what are some of your beauty tips for skin care and hair?
Keshia: I try really to keep it simple and keep it natural. Dove soap is my friend. Keep your skin moisturized and take good care of it and drink plenty of water. When you look good and you eat good, it shows in your skin and your hair.
Sonya: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Keshia: Retired, on an Island with 10 babies.
Talented, smart and beautiful, I hope Keshia’s path is a bright one.
