District 5 Commissioner Lee May, Clifford “T.I. Harris” and Chief Terrell Bolton
partner for youth outreach initiative held at Browns Mill Recreation Center

Rapper T.I. Reaches out to Youth in Lithonia, GA
Partnership Reached More Than 200 Youth In DeKalb County

Rapper T.I., DeKalb County Commissioner Lee May and The DeKalb County Police Department partnered to launch an interactive and educational initiative targeting youth aged 10-15 at a recent forum at the Browns Mill Road Recreation Center in Lithonia, GA. More than 200 youth heard from Commissioner May, Police Chief Terrell Bolton, DeKalb’s Gang Task Force and Atlanta native and recording artist Clifford “T.I.” Harris.

“This was a great opportunity for DeKalb’s youth to hear first hand from T.I. and be given a realistic and candid presentation about life choices and possible consequences,” added Commissioner May who represents District 5. “[T.I.] did a phenomenal job in address critical issues facing our youth as it relates to teen violence, peer pressure and more.”

This joint venture is one of many for Harris in DeKalb. To date, he has not only partnered with the DeKalb County Police Department but also New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, DeKalb’s Juvenile Courts, DeKalb’s Workforce Development and more on previous speaking engagements on teen violence targeting youth and young adults.

Harris pointed out the importance of education and leadership. “There is nothing in life more beneficial to you than your education.” stated Harris. He also addressed issues including gang violence, the perception of young women in the community and accountability. “What’s more important than the mistakes you make in life, are learning from them,” added Harris.

Throughout the afternoon event, Harris answered questions from a number of youth to help deter them from making poor decisions and focus on their dreams, goals and aspirations.

“T.I. connects directly to youth. He speaks their language and they listen,” added Commissioner May. “At the end of the day, we want the message of nonviolence to resonate with our youth. Anytime you reach just one young person, that is a success in itself. When you reach 200, you begin to change your community for the better. ”
