Queen Latifah to Host the 2026 American Music Awards

Posted on by Sonya's Spotlight

The rapper-actress will emcee the ceremony set to take place on Memorial Day from Las Vegas. Queen Latifah is set to host the 2026 American Music Awards, it was announced Monday. The Grammy- and Emmy-winning musician, actress and producer will emcee the 52nd edition of the awards show, taking place Memorial Day from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. “I am so excited to return to the American Music Awards stage to host this year,” Latifah, who previously served as co-host of the awards show in 1995 and has performed on the show multiple times, said in a statement. “It’s been an incredible year for music and there is no better place to celebrate than in Vegas.” After launching her career in hip-hop, landing seven Grammy nominations and winning best rap solo performance in 1994, Latifah has in more recent years focused more on acting and producing, most recently headlining CBS’ The Equalizer and memorably starring in Living Single from 1993-1998. Her other credits include the films Set It Off, Living Out Loud, Bringing Down the House, The Secret Life of Bees, Hairspray, The Last Holiday, Beauty Shop, Girls Trip and Hustle as well as her Oscar-nominated turn in Chicago. She’s the first hip-hop artist with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2023 and National Medal of the Arts in 2024. “We’re thrilled to welcome Queen Latifah back as host of the American Music Awards,” Jay Penske, CEO of Dick Clark Productions and chairman/CEO of Penske Media Corporation, added in a statement. “A true powerhouse and trailblazer, she brings a dynamic presence and deep connection to both fans and fellow artists, making her the perfect choice to lead a night celebrating the biggest names and most defining moments in music.” Latifah succeeds Jennifer Lopez, who hosted last year’s Memorial Day-set AMAs, which was held at Fontainebleau …

Phil Collins, Oasis, Billy Idol and Wu-Tang Clan Highlight Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2026 Class

Posted on by Sonya's Spotlight

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame officially unveiled its 2026 class on Monday night, with Phil Collins, Oasis, Billy Idol, Wu-Tang Clan, Luther Vandross, Sade, Joy Division/New Order and Iron Maiden all named as inductees. Ryan Seacrest and Lionel Richie revealed the inductees on the latest episode of American Idol for the show’s Rock Hall episode. Beyond the performer category, Queen Latifah, Gram Parsons, Celia Cruz Fela Kuti and MC Lyte will all be honored with the early influence award, while Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller and Rick Rubin will receive the musical excellence award. Artists reach Rock Hall eligibility when their debut recording turns 25 years old. Collins, Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan are all getting into the hall on their first nominations. Collins was inducted with Genesis back in 2010 and is now joining the rarer group of two-time inductees. Idol and Sade got the nod on their second nominations, with Idol earning his first nomination last year, while Sade was previously nominated in 2024. Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order and Oasis are all getting in on their third nominations. “Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is music’s highest honor,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, said in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating these remarkable artists at this year’s ceremony — it’s going to be an unforgettable night.” Perhaps the biggest snub this year is Mariah Carey, who was denied once again on her third nomination after previously getting nominated in 2021 and 2023. Also denied entry this year are Lauryn Hill, Pink, The Black Crowes, Jeff Buckley, Melissa Etheridge and INXS. Outside of the performers, Ed Sullivan will be posthumously honored with the Ahmet Ertegun award, which is reserved for non-performing industry figures for their influence on music. The longtime TV fixture’s Ed Sullivan Show had a profound impact on bringing …

Dionne Warwick Reflects On Legacy As She Prepares For Final Album, ‘DWuets’

Posted on by Sonya's Spotlight

At a time when few artists can claim six decades of doing it at the highest level, Dionne Warwick is preparing to close her recording career on her own terms. The legendary vocalist recently announced DWuets, her final album, set for release this August. The project brings her together with a range of duet partners, all on songs written by longtime collaborator Diane Warren, marking a full-circle moment for an artist whose voice has shaped generations. The rollout began with “Ocean in the Desert,” which arrived March 20 and featured Cynthia Erivo. The timing aligns with Women’s History Month, and the pairing merges two of their generation’s most talented vocalists. Warwick spoke with admiration about the collaboration, describing Erivo as “one of those voices you hear once in a lifetime.” Recording together in the same space left a lasting impression. “To be able to stay in the studio and face each other and sing with each other was an absolute joy,” she said. “I feel so privileged to have had that pleasure.” Warwick has spent decades touring, and building a catalog that continues to resonate with audiences who have followed her from the beginning as well as those discovering her work for the first time. “I’m going into 66 years on the road and I’ve sung some wonderful songs over these years,” she said. “This album is my finest work yet—I don’t think I could top this one.” As far as the connection with Warren; it dates back years and has been shaped by familiarity. Warwick recalled their early exchanges with humor, noting that their shared initials became a shorthand between them. Over time, that rapport turned into a creative partnership. Warren wrote every track on DWuets, giving the album a unified voice while allowing Warwick to interpret each song alongside artists she holds in …
