Rayshawn escapes a breathless pursuit and barricades himself in his home with his girlfriend (Jasmine Cephas Jones) and young son (Danny Boyd, Jr.). As the SWAT team encroaches and #FREERAYSHAWN trends, Rayshawn places his trust in Lt. Steven Poincy (Laurence Fishburne) to find the evidence that will exonerate him. Posted in Cinema | Leave a commentChange the Name of the Edmund Pettus Bridge Your contribution — of any amount — will help us do the organizing and legislative work necessary to change the name of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama to the John Lewis Bridge, a civil rights icon that nearly gave his life on that bridge. Renaming the Edmund Pettus Bridge is no easy task. We’re organizing on the ground, having important conversations, and upholding the legacy of Congressman Lewis. All of this takes a considerable amount of resources, which is why we have to ask: If you can, please make a $5 donation to support our grassroots effort to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Your support is so important to our efforts, we couldn’t do this without you. DONATE Renaming the Edmund Pettus Bridge is long overdue. Congressman John Lewis almost lost his life on the bridge during Bloody Sunday. It’s incomprehensible that we still have landmarks to Confederate soldiers while Americans like John Lewis marched on this very bridge to promote equality and freedom. We’re doing everything we can to honor Congressman Lewis and wipe away the stains of racism in our country. And your support is imperative to this movement. Thank you for being a part of this team. Together, we’ll rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge and honor the legacy of Congressman John Lewis. All my best, Michael Starr HopkinsFounder, John Lewis Bridge Project DONATE
Posted in In The Spotlight | Leave a commentJuly 31, 2020 zenger.news Community, Global Rep. John Lewis was “forceful vision of freedom,” said former President Barack Obama in the eulogy he gave at the Democratic congressman and civil rights activist’s funeral on Thursday. The funeral was held in Atlanta, Georgia at Ebenezer Baptist Church, a historical African American sanctuary that dates back 134 years and where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral was held in 1968. In addition to Obama, former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush as well as hundreds of mourners attended to pay their respects to the son of Alabama sharecroppers who became a civil rights icon. As a teenager having experienced firsthand the indignity of legalized segregation, Lewis was inspired to join the civil rights movement after hearing King speak on the radio. In 1960, Lewis took part in a sit-in at a “whites-only” lunch counter in Nashville, Tennessee, which led to the first of his many arrests for protesting segregation. Lewis spent his 21st birthday in jail the following year for protesting the segregation of a local movie theater. Soon after, the young activist helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a reflection of his nonviolent principles regarding civil disobedience. Lewis rode on the buses of the 1961 Freedom Rides, an organized movement that carried out the Supreme Court decision to desegregate interstate transportation. Two years later, he joined the Big Six, a group of men leading the March on Washington to advocate for the civil and economic rights of African Americans. Lewis suffered many injuries from objectors and law enforcement during demonstrations including during “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, Alabama, when state troopers brutally attacked protesters on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Lewis suffered a cracked skull and a concussion and nearly died. Lewis first ran for Congress in 1977, but was unsuccessful. In …

The book is available now on Apple Books in both ebook and audiobook formats at apple.co/OBCCaste, and customers can enjoy it across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and CarPlay. Publisher Penguin Random House calls “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” a masterful portrait of the unspoken caste system that has shaped America. Through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, Wilkerson explores how America has been defined by a rigid hierarchy of human rankings throughout its history and even today. “This might be the most important book I’ve ever chosen for my book club,” said Oprah Winfrey. “‘Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents’ provides a new way of seeing racial inequality, giving rise to countless aha moments and helping us truly understand America as it is now and how we hope it will be.” “I am honored and thrilled that ‘Caste’ has been chosen for Oprah’s Book Club and that its humanitarian insights will now reach a wider audience,” said Isabel Wilkerson. “This work shows that the term racism may be insufficient in our current era. We need new language, a new framework for understanding our divisions and how we got to where we are. ‘Caste’ gives us this language. ‘Caste’ allows us to see ourselves through a different lens and …
