WIMBLEDON, England (AP) http://msn.foxsports.com/tennis/story/serena-williams-wins-fifth-wimbledon-singles-title-beats-agnieszka-radwanska-070712 Serena Williams is back, and she looks almost as good as ever. The 30-year-old American won her fifth Wimbledon title Saturday on Centre Court, beating Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to claim her 14th major championship. ”It’s been an unbelievable journey for me,” said Williams, who has battled health issues since winning the 2010 Wimbledon title. ”I feel amazing out there. This whole tournament I felt really great physically. So I think it’s definitely the beginning of something great. I hope it is.” After hitting a backhand winner on match point, she fell onto her back to the grass. She then rose with a grin as big sister Venus — another five-time Wimbledon champion — smiled and applauded, along with the rest of the crowd. After shaking hands with Radwanska, Williams climbed into the box where her family was seated. She hugged her father, Venus, their mother and others. ”I think when you go through a lot of tough things you just kind of let down your guard a little bit and just be yourself,” Williams said. ”I love being me. I’m a normal person. I like it when people get to see that side of me.” Out on court, Williams had little trouble at the start, using her hard serve and powerful groundstrokes to win the first five games and run Radwanska all over the grass. Radwanska, who was playing in her first Grand Slam final, has been ill with a respiratory problem, making it difficult for her to speak. In the second set and already down a break, the third-seeded Pole was coughing and blowing her nose during a changeover. But she broke Williams in the next game to even the score at 4-4, and then broke again to win the …

Posted in Photos | Leave a commentMiami Heat, LeBron James claim NBA championship; James named MVP By Sean Deveney Sporting News http://aol.sportingnews.com/ Follow on Twitter MIAMI—Going back to the summer of 2010, when the Miami Heat brought together the Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, to some it seemed those three alone would be enough to win a championship. But here in Game 5, with a championship on the line, Miami got contributions from all over the roster to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 121-106, helping the three stars erase the sting of losing in last year’s Finals and making the Heat NBA champions. It is especially sweet redemption for James, the Finals MVP, who was outstanding in every aspect of the game, with a 26-point, 13-assist, 11-rebound triple double. Bosh had his finest performance of the postseason, scoring 24 points, on 9-for-14 shooting, with seven rebounds. Wade had 20 points and eight rebounds. But with the Thunder overplaying James, it was the Heat’s perimeter players who pushed the team to the win. Miami got the game of a lifetime from reserve guard Mike Miller, who scored 23 points on seven 3-pointers. Point guard Mario Chalmers, the Game 4 hero, scored 10 points and had seven assists, while forward Shane Battier added 11 points. In all, Miami shot 14-for-26 from the 3-point line, none of the makes by James, Wade or Bosh. For the Thunder, whose three star players—Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden—are all 23 or younger, the series will go down as a learning experience. Durant led the team on Thursday with 32 points, and Westbrook had 19 while shooting a woeful 4-for20. Harden, nightmare series continued, as he had just eight points on 1-for-6 shooting through the first three quarters. As a team, Oklahoma City …

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has landed a multiple-episode arc on the NBC Broadway drama, the network announced Friday. Hudson, who won a supporting actress Academy Award for the musical Dreamgirls, will play Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning Broadway star who impacts the lives of Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty). “We’re thrilled to have Jennifer Hudson coming to Smash,” NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said. “This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business, and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson. Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.” Hudson will make her debut in the Season 2 premiere, which is slated for midseason. The Season 3 American Idol finalist, also a Golden Globe and Grammy winner, joins an already impressive cast of Broadway stars including Tony nominee Jeremy Jordan, who will play a Brooklyn-born singer with a self-destructive streak. “First Dreamgirls,’ now Smash. I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC,” executive producer Steven Spielberg said. “It’s wonderful to be reunited with her at DreamWorks Television and NBC.” Hudson’s casting comes after the musical drama gave walking papers to four stars from its freshman run, including Jaime Cepero (Ellis), Raza Jaffrey (Dev) and Brian D’Arcy James (Frank). James will return in some capacity to wrap up his storyline opposite Debra Messing‘s Julia. Gossip Girl‘s Josh Safran boarded the series as showrunner in April.
